I have little scientific proof to support this, but common coinciding experiences from other sufferers i have seen on the net, and people who i know from pesonal experience seem to support the theorem that sleep paralysis is a neurological disorder, possibly linked to serotonin. I have many acquaintances who experiment with drugs such as ecstacy/MDMA and of which now, years on, many suffer from this condition. MDMA interferes with serotonin release and damages nervous tissue. Injury or hereditary factors can also be key triggers. My predecessors have the condition as well, except attacks are not as frequent. Stress before sleeping can also trigger it for me. The whole UFO/abduction thing is all part of hypnagogic hallucainations. This condition existed in the middle ages, but due to lack of insight and explanation, there was reference to 'Sleep demons', incubus/incubi (pl) and succubi (pl). In my own experiences, I have found myself to feel that my life essence or force is being sucked out of me, it felt like dying. Some people feel that there is a sensation of someone sitting on them or an intruder presence in the room. I find the best thing to do is to remain calm, focus on relaxing, and just allowing yourself to let it pass. I find i go to sleep or regain feeling a lot quicker than if i panic or try to fight it. That only seems to aggravate my condition. Although i do believe this is a scientific neurological condition, i did have a few apparently genuine OBEs, where i observed the physical environment in my house downstairs, only i hd not been downstairs that evening, but in the morning when i got up, everything i had observed was there in real awake time. Scared the bejeesus outta me.
