Follow-Up:
I am a 55 year old male with Hereditary Angio Edema (HAE). I had my first swelling episode when I was 5 years old. I swelled quite often and would also experience severe stomach pains, vomiting, and dehydration. I spent quite a bit of my teenage and twenties in the hospital, not knowing the cause of the attacks. I was in my twenties before they found the cause of the problems, HAE. I was in my late thirties before they found how to successfully treat it. At that time I was told that a doctor in Birmingham Alabama (Dr. James R. Bonner)was a leader in research and treatment of HAE. He has been treating me for the last 10 years. I have taken different steroids over the years (the drug companies would stop manufacturing the steroid I was taking and Dr. Bonner will find another for me). I am presently taking Danocrine. My oldest son (who is now 36) also has HAE. My youngest son (who is 33) does not have HAE. Footnote: I was told that many people who have HAE descended from the Moore family in Alabama. This disease was once called “Moore's Colic”. I checked and found that 4 generations back one of my grandparents was a Moore. It would be interesting to see if this holds true with others. I hope this helps.
