HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST ON SLEEP

General Information

The Sleep Research Society, a professional scientific organization, announces their 1999 Essays Awards Program for high school students.  Essays, typewritten and limited to 1000 words in length, will be accepted on any topic related to sleep.  Specific topics in this area could include, but would not be limited to:  sleep and performance, sleepiness/alertness and education, sleep in animals, the brain and sleep, dreams and sleep, and the functions of sleep.  Essays may also be based on a research project.  All essay entrants will receive a “Sleep Brain” T-shirt (click here to see the design); teachers of essay entrants will receive a copy of Basics of Sleep Behavior, a sleep syllabus designed for use by teachers who want to incorporate the study of sleep into their curriculum.  Up to five first prize cash awards in the amount of $250 and a certificate of merit will be awarded as judged by a panel of experts from the Sleep Research Society.  Additionally, the high school of each first prize winner will receive a free copy of the Encyclopedia of Sleep and Dreaming  (Carskadon, ed., New York:  Macmillan, 1992, 630 pages).

A listing of information resources, official rules, and an official entry blank may be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped (32-cents postage) business size envelope (4-1/8” x 9-1/2”) to:  Sleep Contest Inquiry, Sleep Research Society, 6301 Bandel Road, Suite 101, Rochester, MN 55901.  Essays must be postmarked by March 15, 1999, and will not be returned.  Awards will be announced by June 1, 1999.
